Alex Soares Duarte
Cinema for new lenses. New lenses to bridge people.
Writer Director FilmmakerBorn in Porto Alegre, south of Brazil, Alex has never studied cinema or visual arts. Instead, he graduated in physics and developed a career in optics research. Tired of seeing the world through the lenses of science, he began to pursue a late cinematographic career as a writer and director of short films, searching for new views and perspectives. Rather unrooted, he tried to rewind the colonizer's journey, living in Spain, Germany, UK, and (at the moment) settling in the Netherlands.
Artistically, he is mostly influenced by Latin American and European cinema, but - as a Latin-American-raised - also by US blockbusters. His films are intended to delve into human relations and unconventional points of view, entangling drama with mild fantasy. Alex's debut short film, Harold (2025), brings us to a public bench's concrete shoes and invites us over a reflection on impermanence and emptiness.
